Questions & Answers

What are Labrador Retrievers?

American Kennel Club Information

About the Labrador Breed

The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is one of America's most popular dog breeds, year after year. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog.

The sturdy, well-balanced Labrador Retriever can, depending on the sex, stand from 21.5 to 24.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 55 to 80 pounds. The dense, hard coat comes in yellow, black, and a luscious chocolate. The head is wide, the eyes glimmer with kindliness, and the thick, tapering 'otter tail' seems to be forever signaling the breed's innate eagerness. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. But don't mistake his easygoing personality for low energy: The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise, like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit.

What To Expect When Caring For a Labrador Retriever

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Labs are healthy dogs overall, and a responsible breeder screens breeding stock for conditions such as elbow and hip dysplasia, heart disorders, hereditary myopathy (muscle weakness), and eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy. A condition called exercise induced collapse (EIC) can occur in some young adult Labs; a DNA test allows breeders to identify carriers and plan breedings to avoid producing the disease. Like other large, deep-chested dogs, Labs can develop a life-threatening stomach condition called bloat. Owners should educate themselves about the symptoms that indicate this is occurring, and what to do if so.

Recommended Health Tests From the National Breed Club:

  • Hip Evaluation
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy, PRCD (PRA-prcd, PRCD) - DNA Test
  • Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC) - DNA Test
  • D Locus (Dilute) - DNA Test
  • Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM) - DNA Test
  • Elbow Evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist Evaluation

What does HRCH Title Mean?

How do I get a HRCH title? HUNTING RETRIEVER CHAMPION (HRCH) - The Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) title is attained by earning one hundred (100) championship points. Sixty (60) of the one hundred (100) points must be earned from the Finished category. Points can be earned in Started, Seasoned, or Finished.

What are the levels of HRC Dogs?

There are five ability-based (not age) categories that the dogs may enter in the HRC Tests: Started, Seasoned, Finished, Grand and Upland. Unlike field trials, these are not competitive 1st, 2nd and 3rd place events, but tests where all dogs are judged pass/fail against a "Hunting Standard".

Training Tips

Training your new puppy is essential for a happy and healthy relationship. We offer tips and advice on everything from potty training to obedience training. Our experience is also available for one-on-one training sessions to help your puppy reach their full potential.

What is a Fox Red Labrador ?

Fox Red is a deeper shade of yellow Labrador, achieved through specific breeding, whereas “Red Head” simply highlights the presence of red tones in the head or coat. Both share the same friendly, energetic nature typical of Labradors, making them wonderful family pets regardless of the specific shade.

What are the colors of Labradors?

Labradors are registered in three colors: Solid black, yellow (anything from creamy white to fox-red), and chocolate (medium to dark brown; originally called "liver"). Puppies of all colors can occur in the same litter.

What about Gray and Silver Labradors?   "Gray" or "silver" Labradors are a result of a recessive gene (d, on the D locus) that dilutes the black pigment, leading to a lighter, often silver or charcoal, coat color.
